Subsurface Raman imaging with nanoscale resolution.

We report on chemically specific, subsurface imaging with high spatial resolution. Using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, we probe carbon nanotubes buried beneath a host dielectric media. We demonstrate our ability to map and resolve specific vibrational modes with 30 nm spatial resolution for dielectric layers with different thicknesses.

Stimulated Raman photoacoustic imaging.

Achieving label-free, molecular-specific imaging with high spatial resolution in deep tissue is often considered the grand challenge of optical imaging. To accomplish this goal, significant optical scattering in tissues has to be overcome while achieving molecular specificity without resorting to extrinsic labeling. We demonstrate the feasibility of developing such an optical imaging modality b...

Raman Imaging of Lignocellulosic Feedstock

The main structural plant cell wall polymers cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin rank amongst the most abundant biopolymers in Earth’s carbon cycle. These three polymers form the lignocellulose complex and constitute the bulk of the cell wall with 40-50%, 10-40% and 5-30% of biomass by weight, respectively [1, 2]. Its highly ordered structure of cellulose microfibril aggregates, embedded in a...

Raman spectroscopy: Molecular discrimination imaging

In recent years, label-free threedimensional microscopy techniques based on Raman scattering — the absorption and emission of light from the vibrational and rotational states of molecules — have attracted much attention for their promise of molecule specificity and subcellular spatial resolution. However, there exists a severe trade-off between the achievable imaging speed and spectral selectiv...

Self-imaging silicon Raman amplifier.

We propose a new type of waveguide optical amplifier. The device consists of collinearly propagating pump and amplified Stokes beams with periodic imaging of the Stokes beam due to the Talbot effect. The application of this device as an Image preamplifier for Mid Wave Infrared (MWIR) remote sensing is discussed and its performance is described. Silicon is the preferred material for this applica...
